The Anti-Ragging Committee shall function as the supervisory and advisory body responsible for maintaining a safe, disciplined and ragging-free environment in the college campus. The College adopts a zero-tolerance approach towards ragging and is committed to protecting the dignity, safety and well-being of every student.
Objectives of the Anti-Ragging Committee
- To make students aware of the dehumanizing effects of ragging and the serious consequences associated with such acts.
- To maintain continuous vigilance and monitoring to prevent the occurrence and recurrence of ragging.
- To deal promptly and stringently with incidents of ragging brought to the notice of the College.
- To create an atmosphere of discipline by sending a clear message that no act of ragging shall be tolerated, overlooked or left unpunished.
Roles and Responsibilities
- To uphold and comply with the directions of the Hon'ble Supreme Court, UGC and other competent regulatory authorities concerning prevention of ragging.
- To remain vigilant and take immediate action against any act that may amount to ragging.
- To publicize among students the rules, regulations, directives and penalties applicable to acts of ragging.
- To consider complaints received from students, conduct enquiries and submit reports to the Anti-Ragging Committee along with recommendations for appropriate action.
- To oversee the process of obtaining anti-ragging undertakings from students and parents as prescribed by the competent authorities.
- To conduct awareness programmes, workshops and orientation sessions on the prevention of ragging.
- To provide students with information regarding the contact details of persons designated to receive complaints and distress calls.
- To provide counselling and create awareness among students regarding the harmful effects of ragging.
- To take all necessary preventive measures against ragging within the College campus, hostels and other premises under the control of the institution.
What Constitutes Ragging?
Ragging includes any act or conduct by a student or group of students which causes, or is likely to cause, physical or psychological harm, fear, apprehension, embarrassment, humiliation or disruption to another student. The following acts, among others, may constitute ragging:
- Any conduct by a student or group of students, whether by words spoken, written or by an act, which has the effect of teasing, treating or handling a fresher or any other student with rudeness.
- Indulging in rowdy or undisciplined activities which cause or are likely to cause annoyance, hardship, physical or psychological harm, fear or apprehension to a fresher or any other student.
- Asking a student to perform any act which the student would not ordinarily do and which causes or generates a sense of shame, torment, embarrassment or adversely affects the physical or psychological well-being of the student.
- Any act by a senior student that prevents, disrupts or disturbs the regular academic activity of another student or fresher.
- Exploiting the services of a fresher or any other student for completing academic tasks or assignments assigned to an individual or group of students.
- Any act of financial extortion or forcing a fresher or any other student to incur expenditure or provide money against their wishes.
- Any act of physical abuse, including sexual abuse, assault, stripping, forcing obscene or lewd acts or gestures, causing bodily harm or creating danger to the health or safety of a student.
- Any abuse through spoken or written words, emails, messages, social media posts or public insults that causes humiliation, distress or mental suffering.
- Any act that adversely affects the mental health, dignity or self-confidence of a fresher or any other student, whether or not there is an intention to derive pleasure or demonstrate power, authority or superiority.
- Any other act or behaviour falling within the definition of ragging under applicable UGC, Government or statutory regulations.
Anti-Ragging Undertaking
- Students shall submit the prescribed anti-ragging undertaking at the time of admission and thereafter as required by the applicable regulations.
- The undertaking shall be submitted in the prescribed format and may include an undertaking from the student and parent/guardian confirming that they have read and understood the relevant anti-ragging regulations and penalties.
- Students and their parents/guardians shall acknowledge that disciplinary and legal action may be initiated if the student is found guilty of ragging.
- Students shall comply with all anti-ragging instructions issued by the College and competent authorities.
Preventive Measures
- Awareness programmes and orientation sessions for newly admitted students.
- Display of anti-ragging notices and important contact details at prominent locations.
- Regular interaction between faculty members, senior students and freshers.
- Monitoring of campus and hostel premises wherever applicable.
- Counselling and mentoring support for students.
- Collection and maintenance of prescribed anti-ragging undertakings.
- Prompt enquiry and appropriate action whenever a complaint or incident is reported.
Reporting an Incident of Ragging
Any student who experiences or witnesses an incident of ragging is encouraged to report it immediately to the Anti-Ragging Committee, College authorities, designated faculty members or other authorized persons.
Complaints may be submitted through written communication, telephone, SMS or other officially notified communication channels. The College shall make reasonable efforts to maintain the confidentiality of the identity of the person reporting an incident, subject to applicable law and institutional procedures.
Action Against Ragging
The College shall take appropriate disciplinary action against students found involved in ragging in accordance with applicable laws, UGC regulations, institutional rules and directions of competent authorities. Depending upon the nature and severity of the incident, disciplinary action may be taken in addition to any legal action that may be applicable.
All members of the College community are expected to cooperate with the Anti-Ragging Committee and College authorities in maintaining a safe, respectful and ragging-free campus.
